Catoraphinoceras was named by Ulrich and Foerste (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren O Llvi Sepkoski's reference number: 298].

It was assigned to Protocycloceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Crick (1981); and to Ellesmerocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
