Chonetoidea was named by Bronn (1862) [Nom. transl. Racheboeuf in Williams et al., 2000 for Chonetacea Schrock & Twenhofel, 1953 from Chonetidae Brown, 1862].

It was assigned to Strophomenida by Jin and Chatterton (1997); and to Chonetidina by Williams et al. (2000) and Rubel (2011).
