Diaphoroceras was named by Ulrich et al. (1944) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren]. Its type is Diaphoroceras avaense.

It was assigned to Bassleroceratidae by Crick (1981); to Ellesmerocerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ellesmeroceratidae by Evans (2011).
