Endocycloceras was named by Ulrich et al. (1944) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem O Aren]. Its type is Endocycloceras perannulatum. It is the type genus of Endocycloceratidae.
It was assigned to Endocycloceratidae by Ulrich et al. (1944); to Protocycloceratidae by Flower (1964), Teichert et al. (1964) and Crick (1981); and to Ellesmerocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
