Productus opuntia was named by Waagen (1884).

It was recombined as Productus (Pustula) opuntia by Licharew (1937); it was recombined as Productus (Avonia) opuntia by Reed (1944); it was recombined as Krotovia opuntia by Waterhouse (1966); it was recombined as Echinauris opuntia by Grant (1968), Termier and Termier (1970), Zhang and Jin (1976), Termier and Termier (1977), Licharew and Kotlyar (1978), Shen et al. (2000), Shen and Zhang (2008), Shen and Shi (2008), Angiolini and Carabelli (2010) and Tazawa and Shintani (2015).
