Oelandoceras was named by Foerste (1932) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1066].

It was assigned to Ellesmeroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981) and Kröger and Mutvei (2005).
