Agelesiinae was named by Cooper and Grant (1975) [Nom. transl. Brunton et al. (1995, p. 932) from Agelesiidae Cooper and Grant (1975)]. Its type is Agelesia.

It was assigned to Aulostegidae by Williams et al. (2000).
