Ruthenoceras was named by Korde (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem Sepkoski's reference number: 298].

It was assigned to Ellesmeroceratidae by Flower (1964); to Plectronoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Crick (1981); and to Ellesmerocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
