Taxonomy
Stemtonoceras was named by Ulrich and Foerste (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-l Sepkoski's reference number: 298,524]. Its type is Stemtonoceras elongatum. It is the type genus of Stemtonoceratidae.

It was assigned to Stemtonoceratidae by Ulrich et al. (1944); and to Ellesmeroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Crick (1981).
