Taxonomy
Marginifera otaria was named by Grant (1976). Its type specimen is USNM 212259, a shell (Articulated shell), and it is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Marginifera (Otariella).

It was recombined as Marginifera (Otariella) otaria by Waterhouse (1978).
