Dawsonoceras was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-m S Ludl-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. It is the type genus of Dawsonoceratidae.

It was assigned to Dawsonoceratidae by Hyatt (1884), Flower (1962), Teichert et al. (1964), Sepkoski (2002) and Kröger (2013).
