Plesiocetus intermedius was named by Vanden Broeck (1874) [Vanden Broeck attributes this taxon to Van Beneden.]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sablesmoyens d'Anvers, which is in a Tortonian lagoonal sandstone in the Diest Formation of Belgium.
