Taxonomy
Squamularia asiatica was named by Chao (1929).

It was recombined as Neophricadothyris asiatica by Likharev (1934), Kashirtsev (1959), Fantini Sestini (1965), Jin and Ye (1979) and Wang et al. (1982); it was recombined as Squamularia (Neophricodothyris) asiatica by Reed (1944); it was recombined as Neophricodothyris asiatica by Zhang and Jin (1961), Fantini Sestini (1965) and Chang (1987); it was recombined as Phricodothyris asiatica by Yanagida (1967), Yanagida and Hirata (1969), Yanagida (1973), Jin et al. (1974), Liao (1979), Kotlyar (1989), Liang (1990), Kalashnikov (1998), Shi and Shen (2001), Niu et al. (2003) and Shen and Zhang (2008).
