Arthrophyllum was named by Beyrich (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 299]. Its type is Orthoceras crassus.

It was assigned to Lamellorthoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Kröger (2008).
