Mysterioceras was named by Teichert and Glenister (1953) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llde O Cara-m Sepkoski's reference number: 298].

It was assigned to Mysterioceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Crick (1981); and to Orthocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
