Tetrapleuroceras was named by Shimanskiy (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc C Step-l Sepkoski's reference number: 524].

It was assigned to Neptunoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Shimanskiy (1967); and to Orthocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
