Haptodontinae was named by Romer and Price (1940). It is not extant. It was considered paraphyletic by Fröbisch et al. (2011).

It was reranked as the family Haptodontidae by Hopson (1991).

It was assigned to Sphenacodontidae by Romer and Price (1940), Kuhn (1946), Lewis and Vaughn (1965), Kuhn (1966), Currie (1977), Kemp (1982) and Reisz (1986); to Sphenacodontia by Hopson (1991); and to Sphenacodontia by Fröbisch et al. (2011).
