Treptichnus apsorum was named by Rindsberg and Kopaska-Merkel (2005). Its type specimen is UCM 2026 and is a trace fossil. Its type locality is Union Chapel Mine, which is in a Westphalian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal shale/sandstone in the Pottsville Formation of Alabama.
