Productus ivesi was named by Newberry (1861).

It was recombined as Productus (Dictyoclostus) ivesi by McKee (1938); it was recombined as Peniculauris ivesi by Cooper and Grant (1975); it was recombined as Squamaria ivesi by Yancey (1978).
