Ophioceras was named by Barrande (1865) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl S Ludl-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2,524]. It is the type genus of Ophidoceratidae, Ophidioceratidae.
It was assigned to Ophidoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); to Ophidioceratidae by Chen et al. (1981); and to Orthocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
