Lepidodendron was named by Sternberg (1820). It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon.

It was assigned to Lycopsida by Chandra and Tewari (1991); to Lepidodendrales by Tidwell et al. (1992); and to Lepidodendraceae by Dilcher et al. (2005).
