Cancrinella sparsispinosa was named by Cooper and Grant (1975). Its type specimen is USNM 152780a, a valve (Ventral valve), and it is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Magniplicatina sparsispinosa by Waterhouse (1983) and Briggs (1998); it was recombined as Costatumulus sparsispinosus by Cisterna and Simanauskas (2000).
