Plagiostomoceras was named by Teichert and Glenister (1952).

It was synonymized subjectively with Protobactrites by Chen et al. (1981).

It was assigned to Michelinoceratidae by Teichert and Glenister (1952); to Michelinoceratinae by Teichert et al. (1964); to Orthoceratidae by Crick (1981); and to Sphaerorthoceratidae by Kröger (2008).
