Calamites was named by Suckow (1784). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Calamites radiatus.

It was assigned to Calamitales by Tidwell et al. (1992); and to Calamitaceae by Jennings (1980), Dilcher et al. (2005) and Chatterjee et al. (2013).
