Pecten coloradoensis was named by Newberry (1861).

It was recombined as Acanthopecten coloradoensis by Newell (1938), Chronic (1952), Walter (1953), Ciriacks (1963), Newell and Boyd (1995) and Quiroz-Barroso et al. (2012).
