Shikhanoceras was named by Shimanskiy (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Shikhanoceras sphaerophorum.

It was assigned to Spyroceratinae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Orthocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
