Orthonybyoceras was named by Shimizu and Obata (1935). Its type is Ormoceras covingtonense.
It was assigned to Proteoceratidae by Flower (1962) and Kröger et al. (2007); and to Ormoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981), Frey (1995) and Kröger and Aubrechtova (2017).
