Billingsites was named by Hyatt (1864). Its type is Billingsites cordeyi.

It was assigned to Ascoceratinae by Teichert et al. (1964); to Ascoceratidae by Strand (1934) and Crick (1981); and to Ascocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
