Montyoceras was named by Flower (1941). Its type is Montyoceras arcuatum.

It was assigned to Hebetoceratinae by Flower (1941); to Hebetoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Crick (1981); and to Ascocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
