Taxonomy
Pugnax shumardiana was named by Girty (1908). Its type specimen is USNM 118566a, a shell (Articulated shell), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Pugnoides shumardianus by King (1931); it was recombined as Wellerella shumardiana by Branson (1948); it was recombined as Tautosia shumardiana by Cooper and Grant (1976).
