Padunoceras was named by Balashov (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 298,524]. It is the type genus of Padunoceratidae.

It was assigned to Padunoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Intejocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
