Taxonomy
Asterias antiqua was named by Troost (1835). Its type specimen is USNM 39914 and is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Petraster antiqua by Shumard (1865); it was recombined as Palaeaster (Argaster) antiqua by Hall (1868); it was recombined as Palaeaster antiquus by Miller (1889); it was recombined as Argaster antiqua by Gregory (1899); it was recombined as Palaeaster antiqua by Wood (1909); it was recombined as Mesopalaeaster antiquus by Schuchert (1915).
