Taxonomy
Helminthochiton girtyi was named by Hoare and Smith (1984). Its type specimen is USNM 330865, a valve (Intermediate valve), and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is USNM726d, Hess Canyon, Glass Mountains, which is in a Roadian slope limestone in the Road Canyon Formation of Texas.
It was recombined as Gryphochiton girtyi by Hanger et al. (2000).
