Taxonomy
Palaeaster caractaci was named by Gregory (1899). Its type specimen is Holotype 48206, Natural History Museum, London and is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Caractacaster.

It was recombined as Protopalaeaster caractaci by Spencer (1914); it was recombined as Mesopalaeaster caractaci by Schuchert (1915); it was recombined as Caractacaster caractaci by Spencer (1916); it was recombined as Siluraster caractaci by Owen (1965).
