Allotrioceras was named by Flower (1955). Its type is Allotrioceras bifurcatum. It is the type genus of Allotrioceratidae.
It was assigned to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Allotrioceratidae by Flower (1955), Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981) and Evans and King (2012).
