Bisonoceras was named by Flower (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Bisonoceras corniforme.

It was assigned to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Piloceratidae by Evans (2011).
