Boreoceras was named by Miller and Youngquist (1947) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-l Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. It is not extant. Its type is Boreoceras washburni.
It was assigned to Ellesmeroceratidae by Flower (1964); to Cyrtendoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
