Cacheoceras was named by Flower (1968) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u O Llvi Sepkoski's reference number: 298,1066]. Its type is Cacheoceras trifidum.

It was assigned to Allotrioceratidae by Flower (1968) and Crick (1981); and to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
