Cameroceras was named by Conrad (1842) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-l O Ashg Sepkoski's reference number: 298,524]. Its type is Cameroceras trentonense.

It was assigned to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Endoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Evans (1994), Frey (1995) and Kröger (2013).
