Taxonomy
Amphiscapha (Amphiscapha) proxima was named by Yochelson (1956). Its type specimen is USNM 119113 and is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is USNM712j, Tularosa Valley, Orogrande, which is in an Artinskian shallow subtidal limestone in the Hueco Formation of New Mexico.

It was recombined as Amphiscapha proxima by Mayou (1967) and Kues (1995).
