Cotteroceras was named by Ulrich and Foerste (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O Aren-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Cotteroceras compressum.
It was assigned to Proterocameratidae by Crick (1981); and to Proterocameroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Kröger and Landing (2008) and Evans (2011).
