Cyrtendoceras was named by Remelé (1886). Its type is Cyrtendoceras remelei.
It was assigned to Endoceratidae by Sweet (1958); to Cyrtendoceratidae by Ulrich et al. (1943), Teichert et al. (1964) and Crick (1981); and to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
