Nautilus orbiculatus was named by Tuomey (1854) [DISTRIBUTION: Paleocene; Gulf Coastal Plain.]. Its type specimen is SUI 612, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Hercoglossa orbiculata by Conrad (1866), Miller and Thompson (1933), Miller and Furnish (1938), Stenzel (1940), Stenzel (1942) and Miller (1947).
