Kaipingoceras was named by Shimizu and Obata (1937) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren Sepkoski's reference number: 298].

It was assigned to Endoceratoidea by Teichert et al. (1964); to Endoceratidae by Crick (1981); and to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
