Taxonomy
Palaeaster was named by Hall (1852) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-l]. Its type is Palaeaster niagarensis. It is the type genus of Palaeasteridae.

It was assigned to Pustulosida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palaeasteridae by Schuchert (1915), Spencer and Wright (1966) and Blake (2018).
