Orbiculoidea prietana was named by Chronic (1949). Its type specimen is AMNH 26912/2:1, a valve (Dorsal valve), and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is AMNH309, Pan de Azucar, Amotape Mountains, which is in a Bashkirian/Moscovian marine horizon in Peru.
