Lobendoceras was named by Teichert and Glenister (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524].

It was assigned to Proterocameratidae by Crick (1981); and to Proterocameroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Kröger and Evans (2011).
