Mcqueenoceras was named by Ulrich and Foerste (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren]. Its type is Mcqueenoceras jeffersonense.

It was assigned to Cyrtendoceratidae by Ulrich et al. (1943); to Proterocameratidae by Crick (1981); and to Proterocameroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Kröger and Landing (2008).
