Atomodesma variabilis was named by Wanner (1922). It is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Basleo (Wanner collection), which is in an Artinskian marine horizon in Indonesia.
It was misspelled as Atomodesma variabilis by Muromtseva (1981) and Muromtseva and Guskov (1984); it was corrected as Atomodesma variabile by Waterhouse (1978), Waterhouse (1987), Astafieva (1993) and Biakov and Kutygin (2020).
