Perkinsoceras was named by Flower (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u O Llvi Sepkoski's reference number: 298]. Its type is Perkinsoceras inflatum.

It was assigned to Allotrioceratidae by Crick (1981); to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Proterovaginoceratidae by Evans and King (2012).
